Sorbitan monooleate, commonly known as Span 80, is a nonionic surfactant and emulsifier used across food, pharma, and cosmetics to blend oil and water, acting as a stabilizer, dispersant, or wetting agent in products like creams, lotions, and paints. Derived from sorbitol and oleic acid, it's lipophilic (oil-loving) with a low HLB (Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance) value (~4.3), making it excellent for creating stable water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions and improving texture in personal care items, while also finding use in industrial applications like explosives and lubricants.
